WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following is the statement of Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid on the passing of former Congressman Ed Roybal, a pioneering figure in the Latino community and founder of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus:
“I was honored and privileged to call Ed Roybal a friend. I remember him as a quiet man with an unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and compassion. He worked tirelessly for over 30 years on behalf of the poor, the elderly and the disenfranchised. I will never forget the support he gave me when my wife was sick and in a hospital in California many years ago. He was always there for me. More importantly, he was always there for Californians and Hispanics across this country, fighting to increase educational, political and economic opportunities.
“Ed Roybal will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
