REID: THE FREEDOM OF THE INTERNET SHOULD BE PROTECTED

Washington, DCSenate Democratic Leader Harry Reid issued the following statement after the Senate Commerce Committee passed the Communications, Consumers’ Choice, and Broadband Deployment Act of 2006.

“While the Senate Commerce Committee did move forward and pass telecommunications-reform legislation, this legislation unfortunately did not contain key provisions. The bill does not ensure that the Internet remains the open and vibrant forum for expression, debate and communication that it was designed to foster. While I support the intent of this legislation to encourage competition in a converging communications market, it is disappointing that the committee did not include sufficient language to protect the openness and freedom of the Internet.”
