Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to President Bush’s remarks this morning:
“I am encouraged that after months of actively working to defeat the G.I. Bill, President Bush seems to finally have come around to recognizing that we must give today’s troops the educational benefits they deserve. He has at long last heeded the call of a bipartisan, veto-proof majority of Congress and thousands of veterans to acknowledge that we must give today’s troops a G.I. Bill as strong as the one enjoyed by veterans of wars past and as strong as the military itself.
“He has also, for the moment, taken off his ideological blinders and acknowledged that that we must address urgent needs at home, including helping those suffering from rising unemployment and devastating natural disasters. We hope that his support today is a signal that after more than seven long years, he is also finally ready to work with Congress instead of stubbornly standing in the way.”
