Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked a bill to double the resources available for LIHEAP to help low-income families, senior citizens and those with disabilities who are struggling and suffering to pay their ever-rising energy bills:
“As Senator Sanders has explained to all of us time and time again, the inability of many Americans to either cool their homes in the summer or to heat them in the winter is not merely an inconvenience – it’s a matter of life and death.
“This is a completely preventable public health crisis, and Democrats offered a solution – doubling the resources available for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. But for the eighth time in two months, Republicans have run away from the energy debate, again proving they are more interested in talking endlessly about Americans’ problems than offering real solutions that could help immediately alleviate the impact of today’s high energy prices. Republicans’ opposition to this assistance is indefensible, and they shoulder the burden of millions of low-income families, senior citizens and those with disabilities who are struggling and suffering to pay their ever-rising energy bills.”
