Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan, Bush Administration-supported measure to fund necessary highway projects by transferring $8 billion from the General Fund to the Highway Trust Fund:
“It is amazing that in this economic downturn, which has seen eight straight months of job losses, Senate Republicans have again said no to supporting the Highway Trust Fund. For the fifth time in three months, they have jeopardized hundreds of thousands of good-paying American jobs and demonstrated a fundamental lack of understanding of this country’s economic woes. Even President Bush has reversed his opposition and now supports the Highway Trust Fund.
“The leader of the Republican Party is conspicuously absent from this debate. Senator John McCain refuses to stand up to his fellow Senate Republicans’ partisanship and political gamesmanship, which do nothing to strengthen our economy. His lack of leadership doesn’t represent change; it is simply more of the same failed economic policies that have gotten us into this mess in the first place.”
