Reid Statement On Anniversary Of Sept. 11 Attacks

Washington, DCSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today at a bipartisan and bicameral remembrance ceremony on the West Front Steps of the U.S. Capitol, honoring those who lost their lives and heroically saved others in the attacks of September 11, 2001:

“Seven years ago, in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, blue skies turned to gray as smoke filled the air and ashes rained down.  The terrorists hoped that our nation would crumble as quickly as the buildings they destroyed.  But they soon discovered that America’s resolve cannot be measured by the strength of our stone, cement or steel.

“Our resolve was demonstrated by the first responders and volunteers who saved lives, cared for the wounded, and comforted the grieving.  It was demonstrated in the lines to give blood that stretched hours long.  In the food and clothing banks that overflowed with donations.  And in the flags that waved on every street, in every neighborhood, reminding us that our superficial differences will never outweigh our devotion to our country and the ideals for which it stands.

“On this anniversary, and all those to follow, we must never forget the innocent lives we lost or the burden we bear for the freedom we cherish.  But we must also remember that we emerged from the smoke and ashes even stronger, even prouder, our endless well of compassion once more renewed.”
