Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly voted to extend unemployment insurance, providing seven additional weeks of benefits – and 13 more on top of that in states where unemployment is the worst – for those whose unemployment insurance has expired:
“On the day we learned that more Americans are filing for unemployment than at any time in the last 16 years, the Senate acted responsibly by helping struggling families make ends meet.
“More unemployed workers are competing for fewer jobs. More than a million Americans and thousands of Nevadans have already lost their jobs this year, and our economic crisis only continues to worsen. Extending unemployment insurance will help many struggling to afford the rising costs of living, and I encourage the President to sign this bill as soon as possible.”
