Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after the Labor Department reported 663,000 more Americans lost their jobs in March, raising the unemployment rate to 8.5 percent – the highest in a quarter-century:
“Today’s unemployment numbers reinforce the urgency with which we must fix our economy, recover from the Republican Recession and create jobs.
“The economic recovery plan we passed earlier this year was an important first step. But more needs to be done, beginning with completing Congressional approval of the budget the Senate passed yesterday, which will help put our economy back on track. We must also do more to help families keep their homes and avoid unnecessary foreclosures, strengthen our regulatory system to prevent future financial crises, make health care more affordable for families and businesses, and ensure all Americans can afford a college education.
“We know the economy will not turn around overnight. We know we are taking just the first steps along the path to recovery. But if we remain focused on addressing the root of the problem and avoiding the mistakes of the past, we will be headed in the right direction toward creating jobs, investing in our future and making life better for middle-class families.”
