Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after the Senate voted to confirm Robert Groves as U.S. Census Director:
“In just a few months, as required by the Constitution, the men and women at the Census will undertake the tremendous and very important duty of counting our country’s population. Their work will show us what our country looks like and how it should be represented in Congress. Unless we know how many people live in every corner of states like Nevada, government is unable to accurately allocate resources for important local development programs like building new elementary schools, job training centers and highways.
“No one is more qualified to lead that effort than Dr. Robert Groves, a Census Bureau veteran and respected scholar at the University of Michigan. Dr. Groves has proven experience and his previous work as Associate Census Director under former President George H. W. Bush is an example of his ability to work in a fair and impartial manner.
“I look forward to working with Dr. Groves as he leads an effort that will impact policy in every corner of our country.”
