Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today to recognize the NAACP National Convention this week in New York City. This year, the NAACP is also celebrating their 100th anniversary:
“Congratulations to the NAACP on the completion of another successful National Convention in New York City this week.
“The story of the NAACP is an American success story. From its inception as a multi-racial coalition of Americans who refused to accept a world with color barriers, the NAACP has blossomed through the years to become one of the pre-eminent civil rights organizations in our country.
“Over the years, the NAACP has given us American heroes like W.E.B DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, Medgar Evers, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Roy Wilkins and scores of others who worked in the name of equality and to build a country that judges others only by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
“The NAACP has been a leading voice on issues ranging from desegregation of our education system to rebuilding the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina.
“Its leaders and members have left an indelible imprint on the 20th century and are continuing its important work in the 21st century.
“I ask all Americans to join me in commending the NAACP on 100 years of service – not just for ethnic and racial minorities – but to the advancement of equality among all Americans.”
