Washington, DC—This morning, nine female Democratic Senators took to the Senate floor to speak out about health disparities in health insurance coverage for men and women and how health insurance reform will fix that problem. The Senators will appear this evening on Larry King Live to continue their call to end such disparities in coverage between men and women. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released the following statement today in support of the efforts of the female Democratic Senators:
“The disparity in health insurance coverage between women and men is a shameful byproduct of our broken health insurance system. There is no acceptable reason why women should be penalized for being the victims of domestic violence, for being pregnant or for simply being a woman. We can do better, and I stand in solidarity with my female Senate Democratic colleagues today in demanding more for the women of America. Our grandmothers, mothers, wives, daughters, granddaughters and nieces all deserve a system that treats them equally and that is responsive to the care that women need in different stages of their lives.
“When we reform our health insurance system, we will eliminate gender discrimination in the insurance industry. I am encouraged that today we stand closer than ever to achieving our goal of delivering meaningful reform of our broken health insurance system.”
