Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released the following statement this afternoon in response to Republicans’ continued effort to block the nomination of Dr. Tara O’Toole as Undersecretary for the Science and Technology Directorate at the Department of Homeland Security:
“President Obama nominated Dr. Tara O’Toole to a key post in the Department of Homeland Security back in May. As an expert on environmental protection, pandemics and biosecurity, Dr. O’Toole would bring valuable experience to the Department of Homeland Security. So as Americans prepare to brace against a flu epidemic here at home and threats of terrorism from abroad, the President nominated someone highly experienced in both of those areas, only to have Republicans say no.
“It is simply unconscionable that Republicans would block a nominee who will have a vital role in protecting our country from threats at home and abroad. This is only the latest example of Republicans politicizing important appointees. Senate Republicans are rolling out tired tactics as a political calculation to stand in the way of progress and the American people deserve better.”
