Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released the following statement this evening after the Senate passed a measure that creates incentives for immediate charitable giving to relief efforts in Haiti following the devastating earthquake there earlier this month:
“I am pleased that the Senate was able to come together around this common sense solution to encourage citizens to help the Haitian people during this time of great need. Chairman Baucus, Ranking Member Grassley and their colleagues on the House Ways and Means Committee are to be commended for spearheading this initiative. This measure encourages Americans to give to the Haitian relief effort immediately by allowing them to deduct their contributions on their 2009 tax returns instead of waiting until next year.
“In the aftermath of the terrible natural disaster in Haiti, we all need to do our part. This is a creative way for Congress to support relief efforts that are ongoing in Haiti. Government is at its best when we put politics aside and focus on helping people. This is a great example of what Washington can do when we come together with a shared sense of purpose.
“I am encouraged that we can help saves lives and give hope by promoting the American spirit of goodwill.”
