Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today in reaction to recent comments by House Republican Leader John Boehner calling America’s teachers “special interests.” Today, Democrats led efforts to protect the jobs of nearly 300,000 teachers, firefighters and police officers across America with critical funding to states:
“Keeping teachers in the classroom is good for our children and good for our economy, and that’s why Democrats fought so hard to save the jobs of hundreds of thousands of teachers across the nation. But I was disappointed to hear recent comments from House Republican Leader John Boehner that disparaged the work of America’s educators. Leader Boehner’s comments reduce the issue of ensuring high-quality education for our children to a cheap Republican talking point. It was encouraging to see my two Senate Republican colleagues from Maine rise above the cynicism that John Boehner’s comments represented and cast a vote to support our nation’s educators and the children they serve.
“When schools in Nevada and across America open this fall, class sizes will be smaller, more teachers will be on the job and our students will be better served because Democrats fought to protect these jobs.”
