Washington, D.C. — Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement on the July employment report. According to the Labor Department, the economy added 162,000 jobs in July and unemployment dropped to 7.4 percent:
“These numbers show our economy continues to grow despite Tea Party road blocks and Republican threats to shut down the government. But we need to grow faster. That is why it was sad to see Senate Republican leaders twist arms yesterday to defeat a bipartisan transportation jobs bill that would have created tens of thousands of jobs in our nation’s construction industry while rebuilding our crumbling bridges and roads.
“In states like Nevada this bill would have been a welcome balm, but Republicans chose politics over good policy.
“Instead of continuing to obstruct our economic recovery, Republicans should join with Democrats to advance a common-sense jobs agenda. The best place to start is to replace the sequester cuts with a balanced approach that combines investments in the middle class with smart spending cuts and policies that close wasteful tax loopholes and ask millionaires to pay their fair share.”
