First Annual Latino Youth Summit

Senate Democratic Leadership hosted its first ever Latino Youth Summit on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 16 and 17, 2007.  The Summit came about in response to the increasing number of young Latinos who have become engaged in politics and local grass roots organizing over the past two years.

Over 100 Latino youth from 24 states attended this historic event.  The two-day Summit kicked-off on Tuesday with six policy panels/workshops on civil rights, education, immigration, juvenile justice, grass roots campaign organizing, and voter registration. Each panel featured key Senate committee staff and advocacy group leaders who are experts in their respective fields.

On Wednesday the town hall brought the students and Senators together for policy discussions on immigration, education, juvenile justice, and civil rights. Senator Jeff Bingaman (NM), Senator Ken Salazar (CO), Senator Robert Menendez (NJ), and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (RI) conducted the policy discussions.

Please take some time to watch the video to see the Senators and students in action!
