America Can Do Better

Real Security
Protecting America, Leading the World
Democrats believe putting America's security first means providing our troops, both the active duty and reserve with the resources they need to protect our freedom. In contrast to the Bush Administrations piecemeal approach, we believe in order to wage an effective war on terrorism we need to: (1) take the fight to the terrorists, (2) dry up the breeding grounds that produce terrorism, (3) enhance the U.S. government's accountability and effectiveness to deal with this issue, and (4) reduce the possibility terrorists could acquire and use nuclear materials and other deadly materials as a weapon, the greatest single threat to U.S. national security. Finally as a new generation of veterans returns from Iraq and Afghanistan, Democrats want to ensure that all veterans get access to the health care and services they need.

Energy Independence 2020
Creating a Cleaner, Greener and Stronger America
Democrats are determined to put America firmly on the path towards energy independence by 2020. The American people are tired of the false choice of rising prices or more drilling in pristine places. They know America can do better. They know Americans can achieve any goal once we set our minds to it. Democrats want to tap that spirit of innovation and build a cleaner, greener and stronger America. Today's rollercoaster ride of rising energy prices must end. It puts too great a strain on the budgets of working families, small businesses, airlines and farmers. Democrats will put families first by taking steps to stabilize prices and take real action to make America energy independent. It will help our economy, our national security and our environment.

It's Time to Clean Up Washington
Doing Right by America
The American people deserve a government as good at its people. These days, people look at Washington and they see corruption and cronyism run amok. With each passing day, additional reports of fraud, waste and abuse are made public and indictments are handed down. They are tired of special interest giveaways at the expense of the American people. Democrats are tired of the corruption too and that is why we are offering new ideas to clean up Washington. We are committed to closing the revolving door to K Street that puts special interests before the peoples interests. Democrats want to end the culture of cronyism and corruption and get back to the people's business.

Strong Economy
Giving the middle class the upper hand
When it comes to the economy, Washington Republicans offer the same old answers and then try to change the subject. But the growing trade deficit and a runaway national debt that puts us into hock to China and Japan show that this Administration and this Congress have lost control over America's economic destiny. Democrats stand ready to win back America's prosperity. Democrats want to end the tax breaks that encourage companies to take jobs overseas. Restore fiscal responsibility. Spur innovation. Open the doors to college. And make work pay more than welfare. For those retirees who have worked hard all their lives and paid into the system, Democrats are fighting to make sure their Social Security is there in full and their pensions are protected.

Health Care
Making the wealthiest nation on earth, the healthiest
If we want our companies to be ready to compete in the world economy, we have to hold down health care costs. Today, Starbucks spends more on health care than on coffee. GM spends more on health care than on steel. We can't ask our companies to go head-to-head with foreign competitors with this burden on their backs. Families can't get ahead when they are mired in endless paperwork and unable to get access to health care, creating untold anxiety and costing even more in the long run. Your bank account should not determine whether your children can see a doctor.
