*Data on this map was prepared by the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT). Job figures were rounded to the nearest hundred, based on average funding provided over fiscal years 2012 and 2013.
The data is based on US DOT’s job calculation models that assume every $1 billion in Federal highway funding — matched by state and local investments — supports 34,779 jobs through all sectors of the economy. The data also is based on the assumption that every $1 billion in Federal transit funding that is similarly matched spurs 37,500 jobs.
Historically, every dollar made available through the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program can mobilize up to a total of $30 in transportation investments through leveraging transportation funds. MAP-21 increases funding for TIFIA to $1 billion per year which will create up to 1 million more jobs.
