Reid: President Again Turns His Back On America's Children By Vetoing Health Care Program
Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after President Bush vetoed the new Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007:
“In case there was any doubt that President Bush’s priorities could not be farther from those of the American people, he has vetoed yet another bipartisan bill to renew the successful Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Democrats will continue to fight to ensure that this one man and a handful of Bush Republicans cannot stand in the way of 10 million low-income children and the health care they need.
“The vast majority of the Americans people recognize that CHIP is a critical program that will improve the lives of 6.6 million low-income children currently enrolled and provide health insurance to 4 million more. And bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress and the governors of nearly every state, healthcare providers and patient advocates, rural and urban Americans, and citizens of all ages are united in strong support of our nation’s children. We will not rest until the President joins us.”

The Senate will convene at 2:00 p.m. and proceed to a period of morning business until 3:00 p.m. with Senators permitted to speak for up to ten minutes each. Following morning business, the Senate will resume consideration of H.R.3590, with Senator Reid, or designee, permitted to offer the first amendment to the Reid substitute; further, that Senator McConnell, or designee, be permitted to offer the next amendment to the substitute with no other amendments in order during Monday's session. There will be no roll call votes during Monday's session.
