Washington, DC — Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement in recognition of Memorial Day:

“Today we honor those who rest in peace because they defended us in war. We are humbled by their selfless service – and as we hope that their sacrifices and courage are catalysts for peace, and not more war – we eagerly await the safe return of the fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, husbands, wives and friends still serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world.

“The long list of Nevadans who made the ultimate sacrifice has grown this year, just as it has in each of the past few years. Memorial Day is for these patriots who protect and perfect our union. It is also for those who came before them – those who fortified the freedoms for which today’s bravest go to battle. Memorial Day is for the veterans who lived full lives after their service, and service-members who never lived to become veterans.

“When we have lost those who gave everything for our values, the responsibility falls to us. It is our duty to thank and think of them. It is our honor to have known them. And it is our distinct privilege to live in the country that, with their lives, they help keep free.”
