Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to President Bush’s remarks opposing Senate plans to reauthorize health coverage for children:
The President’s comments today opposing our plan to provide health coverage to millions of American children through the State Children’s Health Insurance Program are disheartening. Democrats and Republicans want to reauthorize this successful, bipartisan program, and we hope the President will make good on his Administration’s promises to states that are providing coverage for more uninsured children. While the President seeks to retreat from the commitment to key initiatives like SCHIP, the Senate is committed to ensuring it continues past September 30.
“Democrats and the American people want the President to focus on our responsibility to cover America’s children instead of standing in the way.”
