Reid: Bush Must Provide Strategy To Reduce Our Dependence On Oil As Prices Reach Record High

Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after oil prices reached $100 a barrel for the first time:

“It is disappointing – but unfortunately not surprising – that oil prices hit $100 a barrel for the first time ever on the watch of the most oil-friendly Administration in history.  This economically disastrous milestone is a product of the President and Bush Republicans’ misguided policies that put corporate profits ahead of our nation’s economic, environmental and national security.

“A dramatic change in our nation’s energy policies is clearly overdue, which is why Democrats led the way to save consumers money by raising fuel-efficiency standards for the first time in a generation.  But we can no longer rely on the big energy and auto companies to decide when alternative fuels and efficient vehicles will be made and sold in America.  Americans deserve a government that looks out for their long-term interests, not just short-term quarterly profits.  I call on the President and all Members of Congress to work us to develop a forward-looking, national energy strategy that makes us stronger and more secure.”
