Reid: Bush-McCain Economy Costs American Jobs For Ninth Straight Month

Five-Year High in Job Loss Highlights Need for Change from Failed Bush-McCain Policies

Washington, DCSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to the Labor Department’s report that the nation shed another 159,000 jobs in September – the ninth straight month of losses and the most in more than five years:

“Our economy has lost jobs every single month of this year, 760,000 to date, while George Bush and John McCain have pursued policies that ignore the middle class.

“Even in the face of the worst job-loss report in more than five years, Bush-McCain Republicans still fail to understand that middle-class families are squeezed.  Just yesterday, with the unemployment rate at a seven-year high nationally and a 23-year high in Nevada, they blocked Democrats’ efforts to extend unemployment insurance.

“All they offer is more of the same failed economic policies that got us into this mess in the first place, but Democrats know we cannot afford to let this streak continue any longer.  That is why we will continue fighting to create good-paying jobs here in America and put the interests of middle-class families ahead of the wealthiest.  And when we return in November, Democrats will try again to help the nearly 800,000 unemployed Americans who will lose their unemployment compensation benefits over the next few weeks.

“We need a new President and more Senators committed to change because while the Bush-McCain economy may be working for Bush and McCain, it is failing the vast majority of Americans.”
