Reid: Record Unemployment Underscores Urgency Of Economic Recovery Plan

Washington, DCSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to news that the 524,000 Americans lost their jobs last month, bringing the unemployment rate to 7.2 percent, the highest since early 1993:

“If anyone needed more evidence of how urgently we must pass an economic recovery plan that creates jobs, invests in America and puts the middle class first, you need to look no further than today’s staggering job-loss numbers.  Our unemployment rate is the highest in 15 years, more Americans are out of work today than at any point in the last quarter-century, and more Americans lost their jobs last year than in any year since 1945.  There is no more time to waste.

“You don’t have to be one of the 11 million unemployed Americans to know that we need a smart, strong and swift plan.  With a specific focus on creating good-paying jobs, cutting taxes for the middle class and making targeted, responsible investments in America’s future, Democrats know we can reenergize our economy and make it work for everyone.  But we also know we cannot do it alone.  Only by working together in a bipartisan fashion can we put Americans back to work and get our economy back on track.

“Our nation’s economy is in a state of emergency.  The costs of inaction are too steep.  It is time to put the needs of the American people ahead of partisan politics.”
