Reid Statement On Israeli Independence Day

Washington, DCSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today on Yom Ha’atzmaut, the 61st anniversary of Israel’s independence:
“Today we celebrate 61 years since the establishment of Israeli independence and 61 years of unwavering U.S.-Israeli friendship.  The vibrant Jewish community that calls Nevada home and Americans everywhere thank Israel for the contributions it makes around the world every day – including remarkable advancements in science, technology and renewable energy.
“Though Israel remains under constant siege from its neighbors and the terrorist groups those governments support, its unwavering dedication to democratic principles and freedoms, and its people’s proud history of survival, leave me no doubt that Israel will endure.  I am equally confident that it will do so with the United States standing firmly by its side.
“Those who threaten the peace and stability of the Middle East threaten us as well.  Last year, on Israel’s 60th birthday, I was proud to lead the Senate in adopting a bipartisan resolution to honor Israel for its resilience as an oasis of democracy in an unfriendly desert.  Today, as Israelis renew ‘HaTikva’ – the hope to be a free nation in the land of their ancestors – America reaffirms our commitment that we will never permit Israel’s existence to be threatened.”
