Washington, D.C.—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released the following statement this evening after the Senate approved the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act of 2009 by unanimous consent:
“Passing this legislation sends Iran an important message that the United States is serious about keeping it from acquiring nuclear weapons. This bill would impose new sanctions on Iran’s refined petroleum sector and tighten existing US sanctions in an effort to create new pressure on the Iranian regime and help stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. I commend Senators Dodd, Kerry, Bayh, Lieberman, Shelby, Kyl and others for working across party lines on this critical issue.
“We have all watched the Iranian regime oppress its own people on the streets of Iran and continue to defy the international community on nuclear issues. That is why it is so important that we move this legislation forward quickly.
“I know that a number of Senators had changes they wanted to make to this measure, including Senator McCain. I am committed to working with him, and others, as we move forward in conference.”
