Reid Spokesman: McConnell Playing Games As He Directs His Party To Protect Wall Street

Washington, DCJim Manley, spokesman for Nevada Senator Harry Reid, released the following statement today in response to yet another attempt by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell to block Wall Street reform:   “On day 15 since his secret, closed-door meeting with Wall Street executives, Senator McConnell is playing games while hard-working Americans struggle. Despite his change in tune, he’s ordering his party to prevent us from even debating how to hold Wall Street accountable for the reckless gambling that caused 8 million Americans to lose their jobs and millions more to lose their savings and livelihoods.   “First Senator McConnell said he didn’t want banks to pay to clean up their own mess, now he says he doesn’t want a new cop on the beat who will police reckless Wall Street firms and guarantee that consumers get the information they need in plain English to make decisions about their finances. If it’s not one thing it’s another, and it all comes down to the fact that Senator McConnell’s goal appears to be to protect Wall Street at all costs.   “As we fight for the strongest possible measures to hold Wall Street accountable and put consumers in control, we will continue to work with any Republican who shares these goals. But as we’ve made clear throughout this debate, we will not stand for efforts to obstruct or water down this reform, or push for carve-outs for Wall Street.”
