Schumer On House Budget Vote: Boehner Needed Democratic Votes To Avert Shutdown, Will Need Them On Long-Term Measure Too

WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer released the following statement Tuesday after votes from House Democrats made the difference in passing a three-week spending measure to avert a government shutdown. Conservative House Republicans defected by the dozens on the stopgap measure even though it included $6 billion in spending cuts because the bill did not include extraneous policy items dealing with controversial issues like abortion, net neutrality and global warming.

“Speaker Boehner wouldn’t have been able to pass this short-term measure without Democratic votes, and he won’t be able to pass a long-term one without Democratic votes either. It’s time for him to abandon the Tea Party, and forge a bipartisan compromise.”
