A BETTER DEAL: Lower the Costs of Living for Families
Lower the costs of living for families: We will offer A Better Deal that will lower the crippling cost of prescription drugs and the cost of a college or technical education that leads to a good job. We will fight for families struggling with high monthly bills like childcare, credit card fees, and cable bills. We will crack down on monopolies and the concentration of economic power that has led to higher prices for consumers, workers, and small business – and make sure Wall Street never endangers Main Street again.
Prescription Drug Prices
Prescription drug prices are rising at an unprecedented and unsustainable rate, and right now, Americans pay more than double what other nations pay for prescription drugs.
A Better Deal on drug prices means that we will re-write the rules so the federal government is on the side of consumers and middle-class families. Over the past few years, we have seen hedge funds and other speculative Wall Street financial firms take stakes in drug companies and then force major price increases on life-saving drugs. The bottom line is that we will crack down on the companies that excessively raise prices on American customers without justification. Learn more here: A Better Deal on Drug Prices
The American people deserve a Better Deal that lowers the costs of everyday expenses, putting economic and political power back in their hands and giving them more choices. Over the last thirty years, courts and permissive regulators have allowed large companies to get larger, resulting in higher prices and limited consumer choice in daily expenses such as travel, cable, and food and beverages. And because concentrated market power leads to concentrated political power, these companies deploy armies of lobbyists to increase their stranglehold on Washington.
A Better Deal on competition means that we will revisit our antitrust laws to ensure that the economic freedom of all Americans—consumers, workers, and small businesses—come before big corporations that are getting even bigger. Learn more here: A Better Deal on Competition and Costs
Paid Family and Sick Leave
Across the United States, working parents just starting a family often struggle to find the time necessary to actively participate in raising their children. In addition, many Americans often lack the financial ability to take time off to take care of sick relative or even deal with their own medical issues.
All Americans deserve to participate in these basic parts of family life without jeopardizing their financial security or forfeiting a pay check. As part of A Better Deal, Democrats propose creating a national system of family and sick leave that would allow working parents to raise their children and family members to take care of ailing relatives. Guaranteeing Americans this paid time off will keep families healthy—both medically and financially. Learn more here and here.
In the days and weeks to come, we will propose more bold ideas to achieve our goal of lowering everyday costs, filling and creating millions of new, full-time, good-paying jobs with a diverse, trained workforce that has the tools they need to succeed in the 21st century.
