DPCC COVID-19 Pandemic Report

Senate Democrats have been putting people first every step of the way

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Democratic Policy and Communications Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (MI), Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY), DPCC Vice Chair Joe Manchin (WV) and DPCC Vice Chair Cory Booker (NJ) today released a report outlining the work Senate Democrats have done over the past ten months to bring help to families during the COVID-19 crisis. “From the very beginning, Senate Democrats understood the urgency of acting on behalf of the American people. We knew this virus would have devastating impacts on every part of our society, so we took action for our families, small businesses, schools, and health care workers. We applaud and actively-supported this latest bipartisan effort, which will send urgently needed help to Americans. But let’s be clear—Americans will need continued help in the New Year,” said Senator Stabenow.

“This year, Senate Democrats sounded the COVID-19 alarm early and worked to put the American people first during the worst health and economic crises we’ve seen in generations,” said Leader Schumer. “Now, Democrats have broken through the gridlock in Washington to get a deal done to support struggling American families, workers and small businesses. Although this agreement is far from perfect, it will deliver emergency relief to Americans across the country during this public health and economic crisis. This is the second largest federal emergency package in our nation’s history, and it will help the incoming Biden-Harris administration to hit the ground running in the New Year. There is hope with these vaccines, but there is still action needed. In 2021, Senate Democrats will work with this new president to continue working to meet the needs of the American people.”

“Millions of Americans have been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. They’ve lost loved ones, jobs and even homes. I am proud of our bipartisan, bicameral emergency relief package and hope it will bring relief to struggling families. This package will extend much needed lifelines through the beginning of the year. When President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris take office they can reassess the needs of our nation and propose additional relief necessary to keep families and our economy afloat,” Senator Manchin said.

“After over seven months of delay and inaction from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, tonight we are bringing long-overdue, much-needed relief to the countless people across New Jersey and our country who are hurting. We have a mandate to act boldly and comprehensively to help the country get through this severe economic and public health crisis. We must continue working on critical issues like securing the state and local funding needed to support our first responders, educators, essential workers, and critical programs. We also must do more to support those out of work with additional unemployment insurance benefits and help families struggling during this economic crisis with more robust direct cash payments. This bill is a step in the right direction, and we will continue fighting to ensure this is not Congress’ last pandemic relief package,” said Senator Booker.
