Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer released the following statement in response to reports that Steven Mnuchin, the nominee to serve as Secretary of the Treasury, failed to disclose offshore business holdings and millions in financial assets to the Senate Finance Committee:
“Never before has the Senate considered such an ethically challenged slate of nominees for key cabinet positions. Mr. Mnuchin’s failure to disclose his Cayman Islands holdings just reeks of the swamp that the President-elect promised to drain on the campaign trail.
“With this group of cabinet nominees, it’s crystal clear that the incoming administration and Senate Republicans aren’t going to drain the swamp, they’re going to fill it up. It’s no wonder that Republicans are trying to rush these nominees through the Senate, but the American people and Senate Democrats are not going to stand for it. In nominee after nominee they're tolerating a dramatically lower bar for ethical standards, something Washington and America will soon regret.”
