Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today spoke on the Senate floor on last night’s confirmation of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. Below are Senator Schumer’s remarks, which can also be viewed here:
Last night, Senate Republicans entrusted the most powerful military in the world to someone with no experience, terrible judgement, and serious flaws of character.
This is a deeply troubling moment. Our troops deserved so much better than Pete Hegseth. Our country deserved so much better than Pete Hegseth. His flaws were obvious to both sides from the start.
Given the deeply concerning information we know about Pete Hegseth, and the immense importance of the job he now has, I hope for the sake of our troops and the good of our country that he can eventually grow into the job.
Senate Democrats will insist on vigorous oversight of the Defense Department.
