Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today spoke on the Senate floor urging Republican colleagues to allow for debate and amendments to improve the Laken Riley Act ahead of today’s Senate vote to advance the bill. Below are Senator Schumer’s remarks, which can also be viewed here:
Today, the Senate will vote on the motion to proceed on the Laken Riley Act.
The Senate invoked cloture on this bill last week with a strong bipartisan vote.
As I said last week, Democrats want to have a robust debate where we can offer amendments and improve this bill. This issue is very important. Americans deserve for us to debate this issue seriously, including by considering amendments from the Democratic side.
We are going to ask our Republican colleagues to allow for debate and votes on amendments. I hope my Republican colleagues will allow for it.
