Washington, D.C. – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker Pelosi released the following statement after a meeting with Congressional leaders and Trump Administration officials to discuss budget caps negotiations:
“Regular order involves the House and Senate each acting and then going to conference to resolve their differences. Meeting the needs of the American people must always be a guiding principle in these negotiations as Democrats continue to insist that we adequately invest in critical domestic priorities, including our commitments to our heroic veterans and the Census. When left to their own devices, House and Senate appropriators, Democrats and Republicans working together, can get the job done.
“Democrats are committed to working across the aisle to avoid the devastating cuts of the sequester and the limitations of a Continuing Resolution. As always, Democrats are committed to ensuring the full faith and credit of the United States.
“While we did not reach an agreement, today’s conversation advanced our bipartisan discussions. If the House and Senate could work their will without interference from the President, we could come to a good agreement much more quickly.”
