Schumer Statement On Hispanic Heritage Month

Washington, D.C.  Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today released the following statement in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month 2021:

“We celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month mindful of our recent challenges, and optimistic of the opportunities that lie ahead. The last few years have been difficult for Latinos everywhere. Under the Trump Administration, many families lived in fear of being separated from their loved ones, of losing their jobs, or of being attacked simply because of what they looked like or the language they spoke. COVID made everything worse for Latino families, who suffered immensely after losing loves ones to this awful disease. In the midst of these challenges, we are also grateful to those Latinos who have been on the frontlines of the recovery from this pandemic.

“We must honor the contributions that Latinos make each and every day to this country by delivering meaningful change to their lives. That’s why, under my leadership, the Senate will continue to fight for Hispanic and immigrant families. We will work to create a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS holders, farmworkers and essential workers. We will deliver clean energy to protect the health of Latino families. We will invest in stronger schools and affordable housing—including billions to rebuild crumbling public housing—as well as safer communities. And we will fight to make sure Puerto Rico is treated equally and fairly. We have a lot to celebrate, but also a lot of work to do to build back a better, more inclusive, and prosperous nation.

“I wish everyone a happy and healthy Hispanic Heritage Month.”
