Extreme MAGA Republicans in the House are pushing the government ever-closer to a devastating government shutdown – but instead of being straight with the American people, they are downplaying the impact of their shutdown. A government shutdown would be devastating for the American people and could limit their access to services they rely on, raise their costs, and make them less safe. But despite hardliners in the House burying their heads in the sand, the real impact of a government shutdown could not be more clear: it would be devastating for American families.
Rep. Bob Good (R-VA): “We should not fear a government shutdown. Most of what we do up here is bad anyway. Most of what we do up here hurts the American people, when we do stuff to the American people while promising to do things for the American people. Essential operations continue. 85% continues. Most of the American people won’t even miss if the government is shutdown temporarily..” [House Freedom Caucus Press Conference, 0:38 – 1:34, 7/25/23]
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ): “First of all, a shutdown is a misnomer too because the vast majority of government programs continue on.” [Fox Business Transcript Via CQ, 9/21/23]
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA): “That is one of the dangers of a shutdown, that’s why we want to try and avoid a shutdown but again that’s not the worst thing that could happen.” [Twitter, WTOC, 9/26/23]
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL): “I represent Florida’s first congressional district, where during the shutdown tens of thousands of people will go without a paycheck, and so I know the impact of a shutdown,” Gaetz said. “So it may get worse before it gets better, and I have little to offer but blood, sweat, toil and tears, but that may be what it takes.” [AP, 9/21/23]
Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT): “Like most Americans, you're going to see very little impact.” [Newsmax, 9/25/2023]
Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT): “It doesn’t shut down 75% of the government plus, so all that it really hurts is the military and those types of areas that is an unintended consequence,” ... “It’s a lot of show, no substance.” [Punchbowl News, 7/20/23]
Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO): “I’m not afraid of a shutdown.” [Punchbowl News, 7/20/23]
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN): “Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) said a shutdown ‘doesn’t bother him.’” [Punchbowl News, 7/20/23]
