Leader Schumer Floor Remarks On The Need To Expand Bipartisan Efforts On AI To Maintain The United States’ Technological Lead In The Wake Of China’s DeepSeek Announcement

Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today spoke on the Senate floor to urge continued and more robust bipartisan efforts on AI this year, following today’s announcement from China on the DeepSeek AI model. Below are Senator Schumer’s remarks, which can also be viewed here:

I want to open with a few words on the recent announcement from China by DeepSeek.

The news from DeepSeek in China has been called AI’s sputnik moment for America.

This announcement is precisely why I made AI a top priority in the last Congress, and will continue to do so. Our competitors are going to use every single opportunity they get to overtake the United States’ lead on the technologies of the future, particularly AI. And if Congress does not lead the way, we are going to fall behind. So, I hope our bipartisan efforts on AI, which made some progress last year, will continue, and even in a more robust way, this year.
