Majority Leader Schumer Floor Remarks On Senate Passage Of Bipartisan Bill To Avert Christmas Government Shutdown

Washington, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today spoke on the Senate floor to announce that the Senate has passed a bipartisan government funding bill, averting a Christmas and providing critical support for disaster victims, farmers, and other essential programs. Below are Senator Schumer’s remarks:

Tonight, the Senate delivers good news for America—there will be no government shutdown right before Christmas.

This is a good bill. It’ll keep the government open, helps Americans affected by hurricanes and natural disasters, helps our farmers and avoid harmful cuts.

After a chaotic few days in the House, it is very good news that the bipartisan approach in the end prevailed. It’s a good lesson for next year—both sides have to work together.

But by dealing with people who’ve had trouble with disasters, by helping our famers and avoiding harmful cuts, this is a good bill and I’m glad we’re passing it.

I thank my Republican colleagues for working with us to move this bill quickly through the Senate. It’s a good outcome for America and the American people.

Thank you to my Republican colleagues for working with us to move this bill quickly through the Senate. This is a very good outcome for the country.
