Washington, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement today after Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) announced her intention not to seek re-election in 2024:
“No one embodies the true Michigan spirit more than Debbie Stabenow. From the state legislature to the House of Representatives, and for the last two decades in the United States Senate, Debbie has made a difference for Michiganders every step along the way. As the DPCC Chairwoman, Debbie has been by my side as an instrumental member of our leadership team, helping lead our caucus messaging efforts and delivering one of the most productive sessions of Congress in a century. Debbie is a great senator, a great friend, a great ally, and a great Michigander. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Debbie to make the 118th Congress as productive as the last one.
“Debbie’s leadership as the Chairwoman of the Agriculture Committee has made sure schools and meal providers fed hungry kids during the worst days of the pandemic. She spearheaded relief for America’s farmers and provided the stability they needed to make sure America has a stable food supply. And because of Debbie’s leadership in the Senate, there are more good-paying jobs in rural America today. Debbie partnered with Republicans and led the charge to expand federal funding for community behavior health clinics across the country to support mental health and fight substance abuse.
“With Debbie’s help, and the strong Michigan Democratic Party she helped build, Debbie and I are confident Democrats will retain the seat.
“I wish Debbie and her family continued success and happiness. She will be greatly missed in the Senate.”
