Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), released the following statement after the Commerce and Homeland Security committees reported out important artificial intelligence legislation that promotes innovation while preventing potential harms:
“Many of the bills that passed through committee today are exactly what I had in mind when creating the Bipartisan AI Working Group. It is imperative to keep the U.S. as the global leader in AI innovation and security. Since its inception, my focus has been harnessing transformational and sustainable innovation to keep the United States as the global leader on AI, while adopting commonsense guardrails to prevent potential harms.
“I applaud Chairs Cantwell and Peters and the Commerce and Homeland Security Committees for their outstanding and relentless work in reporting out several important bipartisan AI bills, building on the recommendations of the Bipartisan Senate AI Working Group. This legislation will ensure the U.S. can out-compete the Chinese Communist Party, allow the federal government to put in place guardrails against potential harms and risks posed by AI, support small businesses and startups, and invest in safe and sustainable AI innovation with efforts like the NAIRR and the first ever AI Safety Institute.
“These bills will help the U.S. continue to be the world leader in developing and deploying safe and innovative AI, while preparing America’s workforce to be AI-ready through investment in education and training programs essential to equip our workforce for the future. There is still work to be done but we are one step closer to making our goals a reality and solidifying the US as the global leader in AI innovation, safety, and security.
