New York, N.Y. – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today released the following statement on the passing of retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court:
“For 25 years, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was a trailblazer who served with integrity and distinction on the Supreme Court. In these tumultuous and divisive times, her calm, steady voice is missed more than ever. She was the conscience of the Court.
“As the first woman on the Supreme Court, Justice O'Connor was one of the true historic figures of the 20th century. In decision after decision, Sandra Day O'Connor was often the key vote in defending the rights of Americans—in protecting clean air, in protecting women's rights, in protecting against discrimination, in protecting voting rights. I join Americans all across the country in mourning her passing today. My thoughts are with Justice O’Connor’s family and loved ones.”
