Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer today released the following statement urging the Trump administration to immediately grant Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelans. This comes as U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today led 24 Senators in a letter to President Donald Trump requesting that his administration promptly designate Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
“The situation in Venezuela is volatile and violent, so it makes all the sense in the world to extend Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan immigrants, who should not be forced to return there while circumstances are so dangerous. It is imperative that Venezuela, working in concert with our allies throughout Latin America, moves past the disastrous and despotic Maduro regime and reestablishes order, democracy, and human rights. The United States must stand as a beacon of freedom and extend this protection to eligible Venezuelans yearning for a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Venezuela.”
