Schumer Floor Remarks On President Trump’s Threat To Veto Defense Legislation To Prevent The Renaming Of United States Military Bases Named After Confederate Generals

Washington, D.C.—Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today spoke on the Senate floor regarding President Trump’s threat to veto the National Defense Authorization Act over the renaming of military bases currently named after confederate generals who fought against the United States in support of the preservation of the institution of slavery. Last night, President Trump threatened to veto the National Defense Authorization Act, the bill on the floor this week, because it contains a provision to rename military bases named after Confederate generals.

Let me make a prediction: first, that provision will not change in this bill as it moves through the House and the Senate.

Second, let me predict that President Trump will not veto a bill that contains pay raises for our troops and crucial support for our military.

This is nothing but the typical bluster from President Trump. The NDAA will pass and we will scrub from our military bases, the names of men who fought for the Confederacy, who took up arms against our country.
