Schumer, Pelosi Joint Statement On Conversations With President Trump On House-Passed Background Checks Legislation Today

Washington, D.C. –Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this joint statement after they each separately spoke to President Donald Trump by phone this afternoon.  President Trump called the leaders individually after Speaker Pelosi sent him a letter Thursday afternoon asking the President to call Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the full U.S. Senate back to Washington immediately to consider bipartisan House-passed gun violence prevention legislation:

“We spoke to the President separately this afternoon and told him the best way forward to address gun violence in our country is for Leader McConnell to let the Senate take up and pass the House-passed universal background checks legislation and for the President to sign it into law.  The President gave us his assurances that he would review the bipartisan House-passed legislation and understood our interest in moving as quickly as possible to help save lives.”
