Schumer: Gutting Social Security Workforce Will Absolutely Hurt 73 Million Retired & Disabled Beneficiaries Who Depend On Benefits—"We’ll Fight This”
On the heels of the Trump administration announcing massive cuts to Social Security staff—more than 7,000 people—that process checks, benefits, answer calls, and more, along with Elon Musk saying that, “Social Security is the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time”, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is sounding the alarm and saying that Americans’ Social Security is under attack.
“You don’t need to scratch your head and wonder what’s going on when you see that the Trump administration is decimating Social Security offices and staff. And you don’t need to ponder what might happen next when Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, says that the tens-of-millions of seniors, families, and children who depend on these earned benefits are part of some scam—because that’s a real threat and a real promise: they are coming for your Social Security,” said Senate Democratic Leader Schumer. “The richest man in the world and his sidekick, the President of the United States, have decided to attack the bedrock of America’s social safety net, and now your pocket is in the way.”
Leader Schumer warned tens-of-millions of Americans who depend on Social Security could be in serious trouble. Schumer vowed Senate Democrats would fight this effort to decimate Social Security services.
“Donald Trump and Elon Musk have brought their diabolical chainsaw to the pockets of over 70 million people with the goal of slashing Social Security. These cuts could result in untenable reductions in local staff, and will undoubtedly make it harder for Americans to get the benefits they are owed. All of this will hurt our seniors, families and children, and that is why Democrats will fight tooth and nail to stop it,” said Senator Schumer.
Social Security sends over $126 billion to more than 73 million retired and disabled beneficiaries every month. At least 7,000 workers will be fired with the Trump administration’s recent announcement. Social Security field offices offer a full range of Social Security services, including applying for new or replacement Social Security cards, applying for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits, making changes to your benefits information and more. Now some of those offices are at risk of permanently closing.
Leader Schumer explained that if Americans cannot get the Social Security benefits they have earned because no one is working – that is a cut in benefits. Schumer also said if you cannot get an answer to questions or get an issue resolved because no one can take your call – that’s a cut in benefits.
“Gutting the Social Security workforce will absolutely hurt Americans who worked hard and depend on these benefits – these earned benefits. We will fight this with everything we’ve got,” Schumer said.
Social Security has been a crucial piece of the social safety net since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the law creating it in 1935, and it was designed to be self-sufficient. It has a dedicated revenue source from payroll taxes, which workers split with their employers, the New York Times noted.
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency’s online “wall of receipts” lists office leases that it plans to cancel, including several related to the Social Security Administration, including office locations across the country.
