Schumer Statement On CBO Projection Of Long-Term Economic Damage Caused By Coronavirus Pandemic

Washington, D.C.— Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer today released following statement in response to the CBO projection of the long-term economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic:

“Today’s CBO projection makes clear that absent additional action from Congress, millions of Americans, particularly people of color and lower-wage workers, will remain out of work for years to come. As new COVID cases rise, businesses close once again, and workers face painful layoffs for a second time, there could not be a worse moment to sever the financial lifeline provided by the enhanced unemployment insurance benefits and other vital economic support programs included in the CARES Act. Every day that Leader McConnell delays action on another bipartisan COVID relief bill it shows he is more interested in ignoring the facts to serve his political means than ensuring out-of-work Americans avoid these upcoming economic cliffs.”
