Washington, D.C.— Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer today released the following statement in response to an announcement that FEMA plans to release $9.6 billion for the repairment of Puerto Rico’s electrical grid and $2 billion for its education system:
“After the storms utterly destroyed the grid, it created an
opportunity to rebuild a cleaner, cheaper and more resilient energy system, but
the Trump administration dithered and delayed and refused to deliver timely
disaster aid for the people of Puerto Rico. Slow walking this aid, and so much
funding overall, for so long is downright unacceptable, and while this is an
important step forward for our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico, it does not
absolve the president from his mistreatment of the Island. I will work with the
Puerto Rican community to see that these long overdue and desperately needed
funds are put to use in a wise way building the cleaner and more resilient
energy grid the island deserves.”
