Schumer Statement On ODNI Announcement Regarding Election Security And Foreign Threats

Washington, D.C.—Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today released the following statement on the Office of Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) update on election security and foreign threats before the election:

“The Office of the Director of National Intelligence today pulled back the curtain on how Russia seeks to place disinformation in the media and other channels to manipulate Americans, including through the ongoing active campaign being carried out by the Kremlin to denigrate Vice President Biden and aid President Trump.

“The fact that President Trump and some Senate Republicans have echoed this campaign and have done nothing to stop it should alarm every American. President Trump's failure yet again to stand up to Vladimir Putin in the face of a verified attack on the wellspring of our democracy is shameful.

“While China and Iran are known bad actors and we must keep a close eye on them, our Intelligence Community should do more to fully inform the American people of the dangers to our democracy instead of suggesting a false equivalency in the intentions our adversaries.

“Americans—not Russians or any other foreign power—must decide American elections.”
