Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer released the following statement after the Senate parliamentarian ruled that the reconciliation instructions from the FY2017 budget expire at the end of September. Unless Republicans can pass a tax plan by the end of the month, they will either have to pass an entirely new budget resolution, or work with Democrats through regular order on tax reform, requiring sixty votes for passage:
"Now that it's much more likely that Republicans will have to work with us on tax reform, we hope they will start focusing on the middle class instead of the wealthy and realize that tax reform should not increase the deficit, in order to get something done.”
