Schumer Statement On Senate Passage Of Legislation To Make Juneteenth A Federal Holiday

Washington, D.C.  Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released the following statement after the Senate passed Senator Ed Markey’s (D-MA) legislation (S.475) to make Juneteenth a federal holiday:

“Juneteenth commemorates the moment some of the last formerly enslaved people in the nation learned
that they were free. Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward in recognizing the wrongs of the past, but we must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our Constitution.”
